The software is lightweight, scans directly to a destination folder that I specify, and does not crash on me. I can now scan multi-page documents directly to PDF. The version was 11 SE, and it installed without complaining and recognized the HP scanner via WIA interface. Google told me that it should have generic support for scanners, so I brought the CD to the office and installed only the PaperPort element. In that case, I found a solution that worked for me: I remembered that my OKI printer came with software called PaperPort that seemed respectable. Now I don't know about TIFF, it may be good, so if you recommend using it please let me know.

Windows Fax and Scan works nice in systems that include it (XP Pro & business editions of Vista and 7) but it can't scan directly to PDF, only image formats and TIFF. So recently when HP's Solution Center repeatedly crashed on me in a business environment I set out to find a replacement that would allow me to scan directly to PDF.

I've always had some kind of issue come up, whether it the scan button not responding, an HP service freezing the system at startup, or HP's scanning software randomly crashing. The fact that the installer packs a lot more than the essential driver may have less impact on modern systems, but the problem is that the software is not reliable, at least in my experience with several devices at several places. I believe many of us are dissatisfied with the huge installations that accompany some of HP's home multifunction inkjets (I don't know about their laser/business solutions).
